Rarely when we’re strolling down the supermarket aisles and throwing items into our trolleys, do we think about exactly WHY each item is priced as it is. That said, most of us will notice, without fail, when the price goes up by a penny or two. Probably just the big nasty bosses at the supermarket being greedy again right?
Probably not. That penny increase to the supermarket is quite significant when you’ve committed to buying hundred and thousands (quantity, not cake sprinkles) of units. Which is why the supermarkets agree to a contracted price and why food producers have a very keen eye on their costs.
So, the role of a FP&A Business Partner is pretty darn important. It’s not a sit at your desk kind of accountancy role. But a business facing one, where you’ll have to utilise communication skills that are just as sharp as the ones you hold in producing and analysing excel spreadsheets. The business has an appetite (sorry) for understanding the cost performance of the overheads associated in producing their market-leading product (and making sure it goes into our trolleys) and you’ll be feeding it with insightful data analysis and commentary.
And now we’re at the checkout. To complete the transaction, you’ll exchange a degree education, an accountancy qualification (or to have nearly completed one) and proper commercial acumen that’ll give you a bit of gravitas when you speak with the big big bosses. You’ll be in receipt of a challenging role in a business that prides itself on people development. One that whole-heartedly recognises we have a life outside work (hello core hours!) and a flexible-benefits package to fit around you, as an individual.
