In practice, the people who move sectors well do better than they expect, faster than they expect. Here’s why, and how to position yourself if you’re thinking about it.<\/p>\n
Hiring managers often write \u201csector experience essential\u201d as a default, not as a considered requirement. When you press them on it, the real concern is usually that the new hire will understand the operational rhythm of the sector quickly enough to be useful. That’s a different question, and it’s often answered by transferable skills rather than transferable industries.<\/p>\n
Good specialist recruiters know which sectors map onto which, and they spend a lot of their time persuading hiring managers to look at candidates from adjacent industries. The successful placements tend to be the ones the hiring manager initially said no to.<\/p>\n
Functional expertise transfers more easily than people think. An engineering manager who’s run continuous improvement programmes in FMCG can run them in pharmaceutical packaging. A quality manager who’s worked under tight regulatory scrutiny in medical devices can move that mindset into food production. A buyer who’s negotiated complex supplier contracts in automotive can negotiate them in aerospace.<\/p>\n
The patterns of work (problem-solving under pressure, managing cross-functional teams, working within a regulated environment, planning around long lead times) carry across more cleanly than the sector-specific vocabulary suggests.<\/p>\n
FMCG to pharmaceutical packaging. Both are high-volume, regulated production environments. The compliance frameworks are different, but the operational discipline is the same. Many of our most successful placements in pharma come from food and personal care backgrounds.<\/p>\n
Motorsport to medical devices. Both demand precision engineering, tight tolerances, and iterative development against unforgiving deadlines. Motorsport engineers often find medical devices a fascinating second career, and the sector is hungry for the engineering rigour they bring.<\/p>\n
Retail or consumer tech to scientific. Less obvious, but the digital, product, and analytics skills that have matured in consumer businesses are increasingly in demand in scientific and life sciences companies that are building modern data and product functions for the first time.<\/p>\n
The CV that worked in your current sector won’t necessarily work in a new one. You need to lead with the functional expertise, not the industry context. \u201cEngineering Manager, FMCG\u201d positions you as an FMCG specialist. \u201cEngineering Manager with experience in regulated, high-volume manufacturing environments\u201d positions you for a wider range of moves.<\/p>\n
The same applies to your achievements. Reframe them in language that travels. \u201cLed continuous improvement programme delivering 18% productivity uplift\u201d works in any production environment. \u201cManaged the line that produces our flagship breakfast cereal\u201d doesn’t.<\/p>\n
Every hiring manager interviewing a cross-sector candidate will ask, in some form, \u201cwhat makes you think you can do this in our industry?\u201d The strongest answers come from candidates who’ve done their homework, can talk credibly about the sector-specific challenges, and can name the parts of their experience that map directly onto them.<\/p>\n
This is one of the few moments in an interview where overpreparation is rewarded. Read the trade press for a fortnight. Talk to someone in the sector. Understand the regulatory or commercial pressures the business is operating under. Walk into the interview ready to demonstrate that the gap between your current sector and theirs is smaller than they thought.<\/p>\n
A cross-sector move is one of the few situations where a specialist recruiter genuinely earns their keep. Someone who recruits across both your current sector and your target sector can position you to the hiring manager properly, can flag the briefs that are genuinely open to non-traditional backgrounds, and can prevent you from chasing the roles where the door is closed regardless of how good you are.<\/p>\n
