It's imperative to be prepared on how video interviews work as more employers are opting to use them.

You have successfully passed the first stage of the application process, and have been invited to participate in a video interview. Although the idea of projecting your best self via video can seem daunting, video interviews are increasingly becoming a popular tool for businesses to streamline their hiring processes.

Therefore we need to adapt and work to best prepare ourselves to ace upcoming video interviews.

To help, we have compiled a list of ways to prepare:

1. Check the sound

See what the sound is like in the room you choose for your interview - ensure there is minimal background noise so your interviewer can hear you without difficulty. It may be good to test this a few days before the interview and see if you can reduce any echoes by sitting in a room with a carpet for example.

2. Check your connectivity

It's crucial to ensure you will not face any connectivity issues. Perhaps easier said than done, it is a good idea to test your internet connection beforehand so you do not get cut off during the interview.

3. Find the perfect location

Sit in a tidy, well-lit room (perhaps in front of a window.) Not only will this allow your interviewer to read your expressions, but a tidy background can also reflect how you present yourself in a good manner. Don't let inappropriate and busy items in the background act as a distraction or reflect negatively on you.

4. Dress appropriately

Unlike a face-to-face interview, a video interview allows you to dress comfortably - but ensure your top half is appropriate for the role you are interviewing for. It can help put you in the right mind frame of this being like a face-to-face interview.

5. Eye contact is key

Keeping your camera at eye level, and not looking down can highlight your confidence. Nod and show interest and engagement by looking at the camera directly (even if it means placing your laptop or screen on top of a box).

Following these simple steps can help reduce any stress associated with having a video interview - being prepared is key.
