AI Is Making Recruitment Smarter but People Still Make the Difference

AI Is Making Recruitment Smarter but People Still Make the Difference

AI is making recruitment faster and more efficient, but human judgement, relationships and commercial understanding remain essential to making the right hiring decisions.

Whilst much of the public discussion continues to focus on whether AI will eventually replace jobs, many employers are already using it to improve how they identify, engage and assess talent, meaning recruitment is evolving at a much faster pace than the roles themselves. The conversation, however, should not be about whether AI will replace recruitment, but about how it is helping both employers and specialist recruiters make better hiring decisions.

Across the technology sector and beyond, AI is becoming embedded into recruitment processes that were traditionally time-consuming and highly manual. Employers are using AI-powered platforms to screen applications, draft job descriptions, identify transferable skills, automate candidate communication and assist with interview scheduling, allowing internal recruitment teams to work more efficiently at a time when hiring volumes remain high and resources remain under pressure. Recruitment consultancies are also embracing these technologies, using AI to reduce administration, analyse market trends, improve candidate sourcing and spend more time where they add the greatest value: speaking to clients and candidates.

The difference is that AI can only work with the information it has been given; it can identify keywords, compare skills and process data at remarkable speed, but it cannot build trust with a passive candidate who was never actively looking for a new role. It cannot understand the subtle differences between two businesses that appear similar on paper but have completely different cultures, leadership styles and long-term ambitions. Nor can it advise a hiring manager that the strongest candidate may not have the most impressive CV, but demonstrated exceptional commercial awareness, curiosity and potential during a conversation. These are the moments where recruitment remains firmly a people business.

At the same time, whilst recruitment technology is moving quickly, the jobs themselves are changing far more gradually. Despite predictions that AI would dramatically reshape the workplace almost overnight, most organisations are finding that technology is augmenting existing roles rather than replacing them entirely. Software developers are using AI to write and review code more efficiently, cyber security professionals are using it to detect threats faster, data analysts are accelerating reporting and marketers are improving productivity through content generation, but in almost every case, human judgement remains central to the final outcome. AI has become another tool rather than a substitute for expertise.

This creates an interesting challenge for employers because recruitment decisions can no longer be based solely on technical capability, the most successful organisations are increasingly looking for people who combine strong technical skills with adaptability, commercial awareness and the willingness to learn as technology continues to evolve. Someone with five years’ experience who understands how AI can improve productivity may be a stronger long-term investment than someone with considerably more experience who continues to work exactly as they did several years ago. The question is no longer whether candidates have encountered AI; it is increasingly becoming how effectively they understand when, where and why to use it.

For recruitment partners, AI also presents an opportunity to deliver a stronger service rather than a cheaper one. By automating repetitive administrative tasks and accelerating research, recruiters have more time to focus on understanding hiring requirements in greater depth, advising clients on market conditions, engaging hard-to-reach talent, managing offers and supporting candidates through what is often one of the biggest career decisions they will make. Technology improves efficiency, but relationships remain the reason people choose to work with specialist recruiters.

Ultimately, AI is changing recruitment more quickly than it is changing the work people actually perform once they arrive. The organisations seeing the greatest success are not asking whether AI or recruiters will shape the future of hiring; they are recognising that the strongest recruitment processes combine both. Technology provides speed, insight and efficiency, whilst experienced recruiters provide context, judgement and relationships that no algorithm can replicate.

At The ONE Group, our Technology recruitment specialists combine specialist market expertise with the latest recruitment technology to help organisations make confident hiring decisions. THE ONE GROUP

Where we're from,
and how we got here

Twenty years of specialist recruitment in the East – and a lot of small decisions that added up.

TOG started in Peterborough in 2004 with a small team and a simple idea: that recruitment is a people business, done best by specialists who stay in their sector long enough to know it properly.

More than two decades on, we've grown into four offices across the East of England and Home Counties. We recruit for finance leaders, HR directors, engineering managers, tech founders, scientists, and the commercial teams that keep businesses running day to day. Between us, we've built up over 258 years of collective recruitment experience across our specialist divisions, and a network of more than 150,000 candidates we've placed, coached, or come to know across two decades in the region.

The founding principle hasn't changed. Recruitment as it should be.

OUR STORY

Key events timeline

2004

Doors open in Peterborough.

Our first office launches with a team of six on Lynch Wood. Cambridge follows the same year, giving us two offices before our first anniversary.

2015

Northampton makes it three.

Our third office opens with a team of five, quickly growing to eleven consultants covering the wider Midlands region.

2017

Peterborough moves across the road.

The team has outgrown the founding office. We move into Arena House on Lynch Wood, big enough for a growing consultant base and the back-office team that supports the whole group.

2018

Cambridge moves too.

Our second office relocates to Cambourne Business Park, giving the growing Cambridge team the space it now needs.

2023

Four offices, three counties, one very good year.

The Hertfordshire & Essex office opens in Potters Bar, extending our footprint into the Home Counties.

In the same year, we're named Business of the Year in Northamptonshire, and Employer of the Year in both Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire at the regional SME Business Awards. Three counties, three panels.

TODAY

Still growing.

Four offices, more than 258 years of collective recruitment experience across our specialist divisions, and a network of over 150,000 candidates.

Same founding principle.

SPECIALISTS BY DESIGN

What we do

We're specialists, not generalists. Every consultant at TOG focuses on one sector and stays in it. Not because it's the only way to do recruitment, but because it's how you build the depth to spot the difference between a strong CV and a strong hire.

It's also why so many of our clients come back to us years, even decades, after a first placement.

Beyond the recruitment itself, we produce annual salary guides, regional market reports, and the practical resources our clients and candidates turn to when they want a clearer view of what's happening in their sector.

THE WAY WE WORK

How we work

Four principles show up in every conversation and every process.
01

Be curious.

We stay interested in the market we work in, and in the people who work in it.

02

Keep it human.

We remember your kids' names and know how you take your coffee. That's just how we work here.

03

Make a difference.

We're here to help people build careers they love and businesses they're proud of.

04

Enjoy the ride.

Recruitment is a career, but it should be fun too. If it isn't, we've done something wrong.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Recruitment
as it should be.
