Facilities & Health & Safety Manager
Location: Basildon, Essex
Hours: Part-time (2–3 days per week)
Role Overview
We are seeking a proactive and hands-on Facilities & Health & Safety Manager to take ownership of site management and ensure a safe, efficient, and compliant working environment.
This part-time role will be responsible for overseeing facilities management across workshop and office areas, while developing, implementing, and maintaining effective health & safety systems, policies, and procedures.
The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting a positive health and safety culture, ensuring legislative compliance, managing site-related activities, and driving continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Management
Lead and manage all aspects of health & safety compliance across the organisation.
Develop, implement, and maintain H&S policies and procedures in line with current UK legislation.
Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, including HSE guidance, COSHH, PUWER, manual handling, and other applicable legislation.
Conduct and regularly review risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
Maintain accurate health and safety records and ensure documentation is maintained to an audit-ready standard.
Monitor workplace practices and identify opportunities to improve health, safety, and environmental performance.
Facilities Management
Oversee the day-to-day management of the facility, workshop, and office environment.
Ensure building infrastructure, utilities, equipment, and services are maintained effectively.
Manage contractors and external service providers, including maintenance, cleaning, waste management, and other facilities-related services.
Plan and coordinate preventative maintenance activities.
Ensure appropriate inspections, servicing, and maintenance schedules are maintained.
Support compliance with building and workplace safety requirements, including fire safety and emergency systems.
Identify and address facilities-related risks and issues promptly.
Training & Awareness
Develop and deliver appropriate health & safety training, including employee inductions and refresher training.
Ensure employees understand their health and safety responsibilities and are equipped to work safely.
Support managers and supervisors in promoting safe working practices.
Encourage a positive and proactive health and safety culture throughout the organisation.
Compliance & Auditing
Carry out regular internal audits, workplace inspections, and compliance checks.
Act as a key point of contact for external inspections and audits, including those conducted by regulatory bodies, insurers, and other relevant organisations.
Maintain and regularly update compliance registers and records, including:
Equipment inspections
PPE
Fire safety
Emergency systems
Maintenance and servicing
Training records
Monitor compliance requirements and ensure appropriate actions are completed within agreed timescales.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
Proven experience in a Health & Safety and/or Facilities Management role, ideally within an engineering, manufacturing, industrial, or similar environment.
Strong knowledge of UK health & safety legislation and compliance requirements.
Practical experience conducting risk assessments and implementing effective H&S systems.
Experience managing contractors, suppliers, and site facilities.
Strong organisational and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and operate effectively within a part-time role.
Confident communicator with the ability to engage effectively with employees, managers, contractors, and external stakeholders.
Desirable
NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent health & safety qualification.
IOSH membership.
Previous experience working within an SME environment.
Familiarity with workshop, engineering, manufacturing, or industrial environments.
Experience supporting or managing environmental and sustainability initiatives.
