#BeYou | During Interviews

Job interviews can be a nerve-wracking experiences. You want to make a great first impression, impress the interviewer and land the job.

In an effort to smash the interview, it can be tempting to want to transform yourself into who you think the hiring manager is expecting you to be, even if that is not actually a fit with your own personality.

We know that you want the job and yes, you should absolutely be your best self in a job interview. It’s very easy to get caught up in the whole hiring process and wanting the job that you may forget to be yourself during the interview to work out if you’re the right fit for the job, the team, or the company and if they are the right fit for you.

It’s important to remember that being yourself during the interview is crucial. When you are yourself, you are more likely to feel confident and comfortable and this can help you present yourself confidently and clearly, leading to a more successful interview.

Be authentically you!

Being yourself during a job interview shows authenticity, which is essential for building trust and establishing positive relationships with the interviewer. By being true to who you are, you can avoid pretending to be someone you’re not, which can lead to stress in the long run.

One main thing that both you and the hiring manager should look for during the interview is – will you be a good fit? Try not to create a “pretend you” or fake your way through the interview, because if you get offered the job, it’s likely that it isn’t a match for your interests, skills, or experience. You may end up disappointed and discouraged in the future with the company that hired you and be on the lookout for a new role. We recommend getting it right the first time.

Be Honest.

During a job interview, it’s important to communicate your skills, experiences, and goals honestly. Being yourself allows you to communicate clearly and authentically, helping the interviewer assess your fit for the role.

You could also allow for little aspects of your personality to shine through. This will allow both you and the hiring manager the opportunity to determine whether or not you would be a good fit for the team and company. Being yourself will also give you the opportunity to find a company and a position that falls in line with your values and goals.

If there was something said during the interview that was not authentically you, it could come out later down the line, so be yourself and be proud to be who you are.

Questions and answers…

Try not to over-prepare. If you’ve memorised your responses, you’ll run the risk of answering in a way that doesn’t come across as natural. It’s a good idea to have an idea of how you’d like to answer questions, but there’s no need to memorise your responses beforehand. Give yourself some flexibility so you can follow the flow of the conversation.

Try to work in personal anecdotes and examples from your previous experiences when answering the questions when possible. These little additions can reveal a lot about who you are and what you’re passionate about and could lead to a natural conversation with the hiring manager about a common interest.

Cultural fit.

Companies often look for candidates who align with their culture and values. By being yourself during the interview, you can help the interviewer assess whether you would be a good cultural fit for the company. But it can also help you determine whether the company and job are a good long-term fit for you. You want to work for a company where you can be your true self and grow personally and professionally.

The key takeaway? Being yourself during a job interview is essential for building authentic relationships, establishing cultural fit, and communicating honestly. You want to find a job and company where you can be yourself, and the interview process is an opportunity to assess whether the company is a good fit for you. A job interview is really just a conversation. And, the most engaging and memorable conversations happen when you’re being yourself. So, be yourself, be confident, and be proud of who you are.

THE ONE GROUP

Where we're from,
and how we got here

Twenty years of specialist recruitment in the East – and a lot of small decisions that added up.

TOG started in Peterborough in 2004 with a small team and a simple idea: that recruitment is a people business, done best by specialists who stay in their sector long enough to know it properly.

More than two decades on, we've grown into four offices across the East of England and Home Counties. We recruit for finance leaders, HR directors, engineering managers, tech founders, scientists, and the commercial teams that keep businesses running day to day. Between us, we've built up over 258 years of collective recruitment experience across our specialist divisions, and a network of more than 150,000 candidates we've placed, coached, or come to know across two decades in the region.

The founding principle hasn't changed. Recruitment as it should be.

OUR STORY

Key events timeline

2004

Doors open in Peterborough.

Our first office launches with a team of six on Lynch Wood. Cambridge follows the same year, giving us two offices before our first anniversary.

2015

Northampton makes it three.

Our third office opens with a team of five, quickly growing to eleven consultants covering the wider Midlands region.

2017

Peterborough moves across the road.

The team has outgrown the founding office. We move into Arena House on Lynch Wood, big enough for a growing consultant base and the back-office team that supports the whole group.

2018

Cambridge moves too.

Our second office relocates to Cambourne Business Park, giving the growing Cambridge team the space it now needs.

2023

Four offices, three counties, one very good year.

The Hertfordshire & Essex office opens in Potters Bar, extending our footprint into the Home Counties.

In the same year, we're named Business of the Year in Northamptonshire, and Employer of the Year in both Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire at the regional SME Business Awards. Three counties, three panels.

TODAY

Still growing.

Four offices, more than 258 years of collective recruitment experience across our specialist divisions, and a network of over 150,000 candidates.

Same founding principle.

SPECIALISTS BY DESIGN

What we do

We're specialists, not generalists. Every consultant at TOG focuses on one sector and stays in it. Not because it's the only way to do recruitment, but because it's how you build the depth to spot the difference between a strong CV and a strong hire.

It's also why so many of our clients come back to us years, even decades, after a first placement.

Beyond the recruitment itself, we produce annual salary guides, regional market reports, and the practical resources our clients and candidates turn to when they want a clearer view of what's happening in their sector.

THE WAY WE WORK

How we work

Four principles show up in every conversation and every process.
01

Be curious.

We stay interested in the market we work in, and in the people who work in it.

02

Keep it human.

We remember your kids' names and know how you take your coffee. That's just how we work here.

03

Make a difference.

We're here to help people build careers they love and businesses they're proud of.

04

Enjoy the ride.

Recruitment is a career, but it should be fun too. If it isn't, we've done something wrong.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Recruitment
as it should be.
